Google has added Deep Research to Gemini Live, letting users kick off a full multi-step research report through a voice conversation and return to the finished result later. The feature is rolling out to all Gemini app users, and while Deep Research has been available inside Gemini for some time, this integration brings it into the live, conversational voice interface for the first time.

How It Works

Google outlined the flow in three steps:

  1. Ask by voice Request a Deep Research report on any topic through Gemini Live, then close the chat, lock the screen, or continue talking about something else entirely.
  2. Gemini works in the background The assistant runs the research asynchronously and sends a notification once the full report is ready.
  3. Discuss the results Once delivered, users can chat through the findings, ask follow-up questions, or refine specific details.

The process can take several minutes, so it suits questions that need proper digging rather than something needed immediately. Instead of returning a quick chatbot answer, Gemini digs through multiple sources, follows useful leads, and assembles a detailed report with citations.

Voice and Text Stay in the Same Conversation

One of the more practical details is that the report stays in context across modalities. A user could start a research request through Live, lock their phone while Gemini works, and return later to discuss the findings by voice then switch to typing for a follow-up question or to refine part of the report, without starting a separate conversation.

Why the Asynchronous Design Matters

The update pairs conversational initiation with asynchronous execution: a user can explain a complex topic aloud, ask Gemini Live to begin Deep Research, and move on to another task while the system works. This is most useful when the task itself requires time but the initial instruction doesn’t someone preparing for a meeting or investigating an unfamiliar subject can state the objective as it occurs to them rather than composing a detailed written prompt upfront.

The core value is being able to hand off a multi-step task and reclaim attention while it runs, which fits AI-assisted research more naturally into mobile work where interruptions and context switching are common.

Part of a Wider Back-to-School Update

Google announced the feature as part of a broader back-to-school update that also included a student hub, study notebooks, and interactive visualizations. Deep Research in Gemini Live, however, isn’t limited to students and is rolling out to all Gemini app users.

Alongside it, Google introduced a new “Student” hub in the Gemini side panel surfacing offers and tools like flashcards and practice quizzes, while the study notebooks launched in June are gaining graphs, images, and Google Calendar integration that can schedule due dates and exams based on a syllabus.

Practical Use Cases

The integration is best understood as a front end for research exploration rather than a replacement for editorial review or business judgment. Useful applications include developing a research brief before writing a campaign or proposal, and exploring unfamiliar customer, market, or product topics while commuting or between meetings.

Availability

Deep Research in Gemini Live is rolling out to all Gemini app users. Google has not published a detailed regional rollout schedule or developer API access for voice-started Deep Research.
