Google has released its August 2026 spam update, a global search-ranking change targeting sites that violate its spam policies. The rollout began on August 18, 2026, and is expected to take a few days to complete. Google confirmed the release through its Search Status Dashboard and its official Search Central account on X.
What Google Announced
The Search Status Dashboard logged the incident at 09:27 Pacific time, with an official release note posted a minute later. Google’s own wording kept it simple: “Today we released the August 2026 spam update. It’s a normal spam update, applying globally to all languages. It may take a few days to complete, and we’ll update our ranking release history page when the rollout is complete.”
This is Google’s third confirmed spam update of 2026, following the March and June updates, and the company has not introduced any new spam policy category alongside it.
What Spam Updates Actually Do
Google’s spam-fighting systems run continuously in the background, but a named “spam update” refers to a notable improvement to those automated systems, the largest of which is SpamBrain, Google’s AI-based spam-detection engine. Google periodically retrains or extends SpamBrain to catch new and evolving spam patterns, and announces the change when it’s significant enough to move rankings noticeably.
Instead of introducing new rules, the company continues refining its automated systems to identify websites and practices that violate its existing Search spam policies, which have remained unchanged since December 2025. This differs from a core update, which reassesses content quality and relevance broadly, whereas a spam update improves detection of violations against policies that already exist.
What This Update Does and Doesn’t Target
The categories currently in force include expired domain abuse and scaled content abuse (both added in March 2024), site reputation abuse (from September 2024), back button hijacking (added in April 2026 and enforced from June 15), and AI Overview and AI Mode violations (added on May 15, 2026). Nothing in the announcement identifies this as a link spam update, a distinction Google has historically flagged directly in the update’s name when applicable.
How This Compares to Recent Rollouts
The March 2026 spam update went live on March 24 and completed in roughly 19.5 hours, the fastest spam rollout on record, while the June 2026 spam update was released on June 24 and finished by June 26, a window of about two days. By contrast, the August 2025 spam update took considerably longer, running for 27 days before completion.

As the rollout unfolds, Google recommends that publishers watch their search performance closely and consider whether their SEO practices align with its evolving quality standards, rather than drawing conclusions from early volatility alone.
